Mundane But Mandatory

I wrote this post last year but I never published it. To start with I never found the right photo for it hence the not terribly relevant but ever so cute sleepeh kitty picture courtesy of Sacha cat.

It seems like such a long time ago now. I remember feeling so stressed about everything. I was in total overwhelm about how I was going to get anything in my home back under control.

Well, today I don't feel as stressed nor do I keep a daily list of what I've done.  Keeping that list made a BIG difference for me though. It helped me realise how much I do get done, especially when I started to record what I actually got done instead of what I thought I'd got done.

Back then I also thought I would have my house far more under control by now then I do at the moment. But there has definitely been progress. My kitchen is proof of that even if the dust on the shelves beg to differ.

I wanted to share this post with you today for a few reasons:

  • Perhaps you will  find it interesting or possibly inspiring.
  • It was important for me to write it at the time, so I think I should share it.
  • I wanted to get writing done nice and quickly today so I can go and do some cleaning. True story! Maybe I'll go and clean those light switches...

Cleaning is totally mundane. I used to kind of consider cleaning optional, well not everything but stuff like dusting and putting away half finished projects.

I knew I had messy tendencies but stuff always got tidied up regularly for regular rent inspections, moving house, parties and that sort of thing.

Well that changed when we bought our first home.

I had some hard lessons to learn. Sure it's great to not have rent inspections, but then there's no motivation for cleaning the window sills or light switches, no reason to worry about the extra box you can't fit into the storage space and that it's okay for it stay in the hall for 'now'.

It's easy to tell yourself you'll get to it later, but there is always later, 'later' is never 'now'.

Then one day you realise just how long you've been living in your house, that glorying in the no rent inspection not worrying about it approach to cleaning is possibly flawed as you look out the window and the view is blurry because it hasn't been cleaned since - well umm - a loooong time.

So Mundane but Mandatory is my list of what I get done every day so I can remember that I AM doing stuff. Because I really do think I haven't done anything if there's no sewing or crafting evidence to the contrary.

A few weeks ago I shared with you some of the day to day things that projects have to be worked around and a list of stuff I've gotten done to remind myself that just because in my head 'I have nothing to show for it' that its not as if I've been doing nothing at all.

I'm going to continue to publish these lists {edit: obviously I didn't, I didn't even publish this list at the time} of my daily achievements to help me figure out that the mundane stuff purfylles my life as much as a project does; that if I don't do the mundane stuff it actually hampers projects, and that it will take a while to get my stuff and myself to a place where having the mundane things done is not a massive time consumer.

Sure it's hard work to get to the point to where it won't be hard work any more, but so long as the mundane remains mandatory rather then optional I will get there. The windowsills didn't get neglected overnight and I don't expect to be able to have it in order over night either. It's just about realising that creating has to wait until the mundane duties are accomplished and a part of my routine. Writing this list is a part of building routines, and sometimes I forget what I've done before I get around to writing it down. There are things I know I do every day like feeding my pets, but I forget to write it down because it's already a part of my routine and I forget that these things count as doing stuff too, so if it seems like I don't feed pets regularly, please don't think bad things about me, I do, I just forget to write it down.

And by writing it down and sharing it with you keeps me going, because it's embarrassing, people who know me in real life read this, and I don't want to feel embarrassed about where I live any more. I want to feel that weird thing I've heard about - house proud.

    1. "Mundane" is a good word for these household chores that never go away, and yet, when we stay on top of them, it really does add to the quality of life, so it's not such a bad thing, I'd say.
