After last weeks dilemma of not being able to improve the lovely in flight shots I downloaded the latest version of Digital Photo Professional (free RAW image editor for Canon DSLR owners). This week I've edited the raw images using DPP and I've also edited the JPG versions using Picasa.
Can you tell which is which?
The first 2 shots (above) have been enhanced with one editor and the second 2 (below) with the other.
How about now? Can you see the difference zoomed in?
Now admittedly this is not the best shot for illustrating the difference between the editing methods, and I am not very practised with using DPP, however I just wanted to use a normal shot on a normal day and show average results, not the extreme results that you get on occasion.
Nine times out of ten the difference in image quality, once the image is reduced to web friendly sizing, just wasn't worth the time and effort (to me) it takes for editing RAW versus editing the JPG. But it does make a difference. And on that 10th shot? It can be the difference between having a lovely usable photo and a completely useless image.
And just for completeness sake below are the unedited JPG's (after cropping).
