Upcycle Clothing To Dog Toy

Everything has been held up a bit this week as the bursitis in my right shoulder flared up from doing too much of the wrong sorts of activities.

Although I have had to keep off the computer and away from my crochet hooks I've still managed to make some progress toward finishing UFO's which makes me happy.

I've been holding onto some old cotton tracksuit pants (do you call them sweat pants or tracksuit pants?) with the intention of up-cycling them into a new top. I even got as far cutting out the pattern pieces.

Insertion Lace in Cross Treble Crochet (aka Cross Double Crochet - US)

This simple little crochet insertion lace was very difficult for me to work when I first tried to make it. I had mastered the foundation chain and was learning how to work crossed double crochet stitches.

I was inspired to try to make this insertion by the description Thérèse de Dillmont gives in her book the Encyclopaedia of Needlework.
"This kind of treble produces an openwork effect and is often used for the heading of lace or for insertions for ladies' or children's underwear."

Crochet Edged Bowl Cover

crochet bowl cover with beads

In Australia we are very familiar with hosting Christmas events in warm weather, so as my final post for this years Christmas in July series I just had to share a warm weather Christmas catering tip for all of my northern hemisphere friends who are celebrating Christmas in July in glorious hot weather.

Hot weather often includes outdoor catering, in the shade if at all possible. If your shade happens to be provided by a tree, leaves and twigs that fall out of the tree may try to jump in with the salad to join the party.

Hot weather also means the bugs are awake and ready to party too.

Favourite Blooms

Black and yellow pea flower

My 55mm - 250mm lens rarely gives me such smooth pretty bokeh as it has in this pea-flower shot. Most of the plant was in shadows and I had to carefully position everything to get the little sunbeam that was poking through. A moment later and the sunbeam was gone.

tiny cream flower bush with spiky leaves

I've been out trying to capture some early wild flowers. It's a real challenge to get the focus right on these tiny little flowers. All of these shots were a bit of a miss. I'll shall have to try again this season. What are your tips for macro shots?

Christmas Tree Garland

Christmas In July Blog Hop

Have you ever heard of Christmas in July?

No-one seems to be sure of it's origins although there is a 1940's Movie Titled Christmas in July it is apparently not the origin of the annual event.

According to this ABC radio article Christmas in July is a regular celebration here in Australia, however I can assure you it is not.

Black Shouldered Kite

Black Shouldered Kite

Australian Black Shouldered Kite

We went shooting last week and I managed to get my first shots of this lovely raptor. I could wish for sharper results but considering I was using the 55mm-250mm zoom lens, and he was maybe 50 meters away up a tall tree, I'm pretty happy with how they've turned out.

This small raptor at 35–38 cm (14–15 in) it is quite a stunner with ruby-red eyeballs.

Crochet With Sisal

30m roll of sisal rope and 3 balls of wool

It's #FinishItFriday where I share with you a project that needs to be completed.

Accept it's not Friday, it's Saturday.

Life happened as it does and I spent most of Friday monitoring a sick doggy very closely trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Turns out Freki has a sore tooth and not a sprained leg (he limps every time he hurts himself anywhere) or a bite or any of the other things we were worried about and were able to eliminate based on his his eagerness to run around like an idiot and his good appetite, although I've had to make him soft meals and soak his breakfast biscuits. He has been terribly sooky and needs a lot of attention.
