How To Make Continuous Bias Binding From A Rectangle

There are several ways to go about cutting and sewing bias binding tape. They've all got their pro's and con's. I'm going to show you my favourite method, but first I'll discuss the strip-by-strip method and the continuous method using a square of fabric.

Whichever method you use you'll start with deciding how wide you want your finished binding to be and multiply that by four. For example if you want a 1/4 inch wide finish on your hem you want to cut 1 inch wide strips. (unless you want double fold bias binding in which case you multiply by six).

Remnants or Rubbish?

decluttering fabric remnants scraps

Earlier this week I did some decluttering which included a laundry basket full to the top with remnants.

After washing and sorting it looked like this.

tie remnants together with a fabric scrap

On the left is a roll of cotton knit remnants, which I'm keeping.

On the right is a roll of stretchy synthetic nastiness. I detest synthetic fabric but I detest stretchy synthetic fabric even more. I put all the pieces of a useful size together and tied them into a roll with a piece of scrap and added them to my donate pile.

Okay, it actually looked like this, because there was a good fistful of cotton and faux suede pieces that were too small to be useful but to big to throw out so they went in the rag box.

recycle fabric scraps

A lot of them will get used in the shed for wood staining, paint clean-up, glue drips and stuff. Some are destined to be used for wall washing, window cleaning and the suede will be great for dusting. It's surprising how easy it is to use those bits up.

And this is what was left. Half a basket of pieces that should have hit the bin the day they were cut. They are going straight in the rubbish.

discard small fabric scraps

One laundry basket of remnants down, a gazillion to go. What do you do with your scraps?

  1. Thanks for linking up at the Two Uses Tuesday Link Party! I collect remnants for other peoples sewing projects, because someday I might need them. For what, who knows?!

    1. We'll have to a remnants busting special, I still have bags and bags full.
