How To Make Continuous Bias Binding From A Rectangle

There are several ways to go about cutting and sewing bias binding tape. They've all got their pro's and con's. I'm going to show you my favourite method, but first I'll discuss the strip-by-strip method and the continuous method using a square of fabric.

Whichever method you use you'll start with deciding how wide you want your finished binding to be and multiply that by four. For example if you want a 1/4 inch wide finish on your hem you want to cut 1 inch wide strips. (unless you want double fold bias binding in which case you multiply by six).

Strip-by-Strip Method

Don't touch it! Don't even look at it.

Don't touch it! Don't even look at it.

When you've decluttered something it's important not touch it again.

Don't even look at it!

Put it into an opaque container for donating and let it go.
If you look at it again there is a good chance you will touch it. If you touch it there is a good chance you will take it out and add it back to your clutter.

When you see something you are more likely to want to touch it. Touching it reinforces the urge to keep it, so not touching will help to make it easier to let stuff go.

And that is why an opaque container is a vital part of the decluttering process. Use it with impunity.

By the same token when you're saving clothing for up-cycling go ahead and cut it up straight away.

Cut up clothes that are destined for upcycle projects to ensure they can't return to your wardrobe.

Turn those t-shirts into t-shirt yarn. Chop along the seam lines of those denim pants. Do whatever is necessary to make them unreturnable to your wardrobe.

Whatever you're upcycling, donating, trashing or otherwise, do whatever it takes to ensure it doesn't get a second chance to become clutter again.

Decluttering is hard enough without having to do it twice.
